REGION & ACTIVITIES

The farming village of Sonnleitn on Nassfeld is located at 1,400 m altitude in the Carnic Alps, directly on the border with Italy. Within the region of the ‘nature arena’ Nassfeld are the lakes Weissensee (at 1,000 m and Europe’s largest natural ice surface in winter) as well as Presseggersee (with Austria’s second largest reed bed, and often referred to as ‘the bathtub of the Gailtal’ for its exceptional temperature of up to 28°C). Both lakes have drinking water quality!

The unique wulfenia (Wulfenia carinthiaca) is a plant that grows only in the Nassfeld region, at 1,300–2,000 m altitude, and is in beautiful bloom from June to the end of July.

In summer:

You can explore numerous hiking and mountain bike routes, canyoning, rafting, rock labyrinth, mountain scooters and mountain board for adventurers, as well as a 'flying fox' ride. Farm cottages on the alpine pastures offer regional food and drinks – why not enjoy a hiking break while being served a hearty snack of homemade bacon and Gailtal cheese? Magnificent lakes in the immediate vicinity offer swimming fun. Visit popular tourist sites or enjoy the varied and interesting offers for lovers of culture, anywhere from Gailtal to Klagenfurt. Culinary excursions to nearby Italy and Slovenia are highly recommended. The Carnic bicycle path provides an idyllic setting to cycle alongside the river Gail, all the way to Villach.

In winter:

The Nassfeld ski arena is Carinthia’s largest, most modern and varied skiing region as well as being one of the top ten ski areas in Austria. 110 km of avalanche-safe ski slopes with all difficulty levels with end-to-end snow making, snowboard fun parks including a halfpipe, 300 km of cross-country skiing trails, illuminated toboggan runs, as well as 150 km of appealing winter hiking trails, all add up to a guarantee of winter fun.
